Ganjam Kewda Rooh is a ??? in the state of Orissa, India. (Ganjam Kewda Rooh (Geographical Indication), Orissa, India ) (Kewda Industry in Ganjam ) ‘Kewda’ or screw pine (Pandanus fascicularis Lam.), is locally known as ‘Kia.’ It is an economically important species due to its male inflorescence, which are valued for the fragrant tender white spathes covering the flowers. Its derived perfumery products include Kewda attar, Kewda water and Kewda oil (rooh Kewda). The Ganjam district of Orissa supplies about 85-90% of the country’s kewda essence. Kewda grows in the 45 km x 15 km coastal belt along the Bay of Bengal. Kewda brings nearly 30-40 crores (1 crore=10,000,000) of additional income to its people. This flourishing small scale industry, with around 140 traditional distillation units in nearly 200 villages/ hamlets of the district, processes an estimated 35 million flowers (3,500 tons) worth 10 million USD annually.
